How Unplanned Used Oil Disposal Impacts Ecology?

Toxic Used Oils – A Disaster for Earth

Ecological pollution due to Used Oil contamination is a menace for the planet in various ways. That’s why, CPCB has introduced EPR Used Oil Registration for eco-friendly management of Used Oil in India. According to Material Science Research India reports, reckless treatment of Used Oil impacts water, air, soil, and wildlife significantly.

The primary cause of Waste Oil contamination has been listed below-

  • Random disposal of Hydrocarbons and additive contents available in Used Oil within the surrounding.
  • Reckless recycling of lubricating and Motor Oils on the planet
  • Used Oil contains huge amount of metal particles burnt on the road

The emission of these toxic elements often impacts human health adversely. Some of those health hazards include-

  • Inhalation, ingestion or skin-related illness
  • Lipid granuloma in lung, eczematous, melanosis and other dermatitis

Statistics On Haphazard Treatment of Used Oil on Ecology

There are plenty of reasons for CPCB to implement EPR on Used Oil in India. Controlling the negative impact of Used Oil management on the environment is one of those.

The CPCB’s EPR Used Oil Registration combats unorganized Oil waste disposal, which often leads to some of these ecological Pollutions listed below-

  • Unplanned dumping of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)s like Benzene, Toluene, Chlorinated Solvents etc. impacts ecosystem and adversely quality
  • Contaminating the Biodiversity negatively as a whole
  • Oceanologists believe Improper treatment of Oil Waste is responsible for 20% of marine pollution
  • Used Oil significantly pollutes 30% of agricultural land, causing soil infertility
  • Used Oil contamination is a threat for 25% of Wildlife Population

Understanding EPR Used Oil Registration

The CPCB has introduced EPR for Used Oil to battle environmental Pollution triggered due to Oil Waste contamination. The primary aim of imposing EPR Used Oil Registration is to secure the environment from ecological Pollution. The CPCB has mandated certain initiatives to protect the environment. Some of those initiatives are shared below-

  • Mandating specific recycling targets for Base/Lubricant Oil Producer and Importer for specific Year.
  • Enabling Base/Lubricant Oil Importers to meet yearly EPR Targets by purchasing Re-refining or energy recovery Certificates from Registered Recyclers
  • Including all types of Oil derived from Crude Oil or synthetic oil mixtures under Schedule V- of Hazardous and Other Waste Management Rules
  • Including every Producer and Importer of Base/Lubrication Oil under the specific Producer Category mentioned in CPCB’s FAQ guide

Why EPR Used Oil Registration is Necessary?

The primary reason behind introducing EPR for Used Oil Registration in India is to assure sustainability. Apart from that, obtaining EPR Used Oil Registration has few other benefits like-

  • Create awareness among sustainable recycling and disposal of end-of-life Used Oil
  • Encourage the establishment of sustainable recycling infrastructure
  • Engage maximum businesses to associate with waste reduction technologies, innovative Used Oil re-refining techniques
  • Bringing maximum businesses handling Used Oil under the EPR Framework in India
