Necessity of BIS Registration with ISI Mark on Domestic Pressure Cookers
The Bureau of Indian Standards mandated a standard quality for rubber gaskets and other components used in domestic pressure cookers to prioritise safety measures. According to the BIS, mandating standard quality on domestic pressure cookers may defeat the incidents of pressure cooker bursting due to faulty components. That’s why, the Bureau of Indian Standard has mandated the ISI BIS Registration mark on domestic pressure cookers.
A relevant news source claimed that the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), had found Domestic Pressure Cookers defying ISI BIS Standards were sold on e-commerce platforms back in 2020. That’s why, BIS introduced the Bureau of Indian Standards Registration 2347:2017 for Domestic Pressure Cookers.
Key Factors Mandated Under ISI BIS Registration Mark on Pressure Cookers
According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, every domestic pressure cooker must undergo a certain set of Quality Tests to check whether they are complying with BIS 2347:2017 Standard. Only the pressure cookers that pass the 2347:2017 quality-standard are granted ISI marked BIS Registration label.
A few major tests to be conducted for identifying the quality of domestic pressure cookers include –
- Evaluating the hardness of the material
- Testing the tensile strength of the rubber gasket quality
- Checking the air and proof pressure
- Evaluating the air compression strength
- Performance Test of the rubber gasket
- Testing the cooker’s performance at elongation breaks
- Checking the pressure-regulating device operation test
- Safety Pressure Relief Device Performance Test
- Bursting the Pressure Test
- Testing Lid Removal performance under pressure
- Evaluating the Spring-Loaded mechanism of the cooker
Additional Testing Standards of Pressure Cooker under ISI BIS Registration Mark
Apart from some of the key factors shared above, a domestic pressure cooker undergoes few additional pre-ISI BIS Registration license testing standard, as well. Those tests are conducted to detect the following factors-
- The nominal capacity of the pressure cooker must range in between 1-22 litres
- Every component of a domestic cooker coming in contact with food or steam like- vessel, gasket, pressure regulating device, and internal accessories must undergo the 2347:2017 IS Standard Quality test
- The pressure cooker components must not be responsible for discolouring the food, or spoil the food flavour and its odour by any means
The ISI BIS Registration mark categorise Domestic Pressure cookers in 3 major Groups. They include-

List of Quality Standards to Maintain as per IS 2347:2017 in Domestic Pressure Cookers
A BIS Certificate isissued to every Domestic Pressure Cooker Cooker after running some of these quality tests mentioned in the Product manual of BIS as per 2347:2017 Standard. They include-
- Name of the Product
- Capacity details of the respective Pressure Cooker
- Type of Coating used on it – Be it Powder Coated/ Hard Anodized/Non-Stick etc.
- Quality of the Inner/Outer Lid
- Aluminium Alloy/Stainless Steel Material used in it
