Traffic Rules In India Driving through India

Will Stricter Fines Impact Traffic Rules – or Is it Just an Eyewash?

That’s a crucial query of the hour for the nation, especially after the shocking accident that happened at Vadodara lately!

Rash Driving Comes with a Heavy Price Now!

Honestly, I feel that India needs harsh traffic rules and 10X higher penalties for showing limits to some people suffering from the ‘God Complex’ while moving on Indian roads.

The recent traffic rules will be a ‘tit-for-tat’ lesson for those careless drivers and juvenile motorists using Indian roads to flex their ‘Fast & Furious’ driving skills.

It’s time to put an end to such ‘hooliganism’ I would say, as the revived Indian Traffic rules might force them to pay bitterly for such actions!

Indian Roads Turned an ‘Entry Gate’ to Hell These Days

  • Back in 2023, a report published by The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways claimed that a total number of 4,61,312 road accidents have been reported by the Union Territories.
  • In 2022, around 168,000 fatal road accidents led to an average number of deaths counting to 462, per day
  • In Uttarakhand, an overloaded bus with pilgrims and tourists lost control, plunging 200 feet down into the river. It caused 36 deaths and six injuries.

That’s not all, recently, a 23-year-old driver ran over one woman and injured eight in the Kareilibaugh area is a recent addition to the long list of reckless driving on Indian roads.

The time has come to put an end to all of these rookies thinking of them as ‘F1 Ferrari’ drivers on Indian roads.

The revived Indian traffic rule has introduced some of these reforms to nab these bandits after all!

Revived Traffic Regulations – Key Highlights

If you’re complying with the Traffic Rules, then you don’t have to worry at all!

But if you’re thinking of yourself as a ‘TEJAS’ pilot on Indian roads, you might consider paying attention to some of these revived traffic rules shared below-

  • Drunk Driving – 10,000 INR fine or rigorous imprisonment for 6 months. If the offence is repetitive, the offender might be behind bars for 2 years
  •  Bike Rider without a Helmet? Not any more – Any rider on a 2-wheeler without a helmet faces a 1,000 INR fine and suspension of license for 3-months
  • Triple Riders – Better be careful now – any 2-wheeler found with triple riders will be fined 1,000 INR which was 100 INR before
  • Seatbelt is not needed – Really?  Individuals seated in the front seat without a seatbelt will be charged 1,000 INR or can be 10X higher as well, depending on the violation of the rule.

Now does this thought strike your mind for once- ‘what’s the point in wasting 1,000 INR’ to traffic personnel? Good for you!

  • Either mobile or the wheel, the choice is yours – Gone are those days when talking and driving was a common scenario on Indian roads. ‘Yaar sudhar ja mere bhai’ or else get ready to pay a 5,000 INR souvenir to the on-duty traffic police.

Don’t have a valid license? Drive when you have one – Any driver found without a valid driving license on Indian roads can attract the traffic police to claim a 5,000 INR fine which was 500 INR just earlier

Garage vehicle on the road, if the Expired Pollution Certificate is Expired, unless you’re a Richie rich –   violating Pollution Certificate now leads to 6 months imprisonment or a fine up to 10,000 INR

Reckless Driving? ‘In Your Dreams’ – If you think you’re an F1 driver, do yourself a favour. Find a racing track, or else traffic police know how to shoot a penalty of 5,000 INR from now onwards

Blocking emergency vehicles because you’re a self-proclaimed VIP? Not anymore – The revived traffic rule has a penalty provision of 10,000 INR now which was 1,000 INR before

Public Roads are not meant to perform action stunts– I respect your racing spree and speeding caliber, but… Trust me on this, if you think of speeding the vehicle in Bollywood action scenes, you have to pay a penalty provision of 5,000 INR now

Time to Put an End to all Overloaded vehicles – Any overloaded vehicles found over Indian roads will have to pay a hefty fine of 20,000 INR which was 2,000 INR before

Stop Jumping traffic signals – If you care about your wallet, better accept the following signals from now onwards, or else a penalty provision of 5,000 INR awaits!

It’s too early to comment on the effectiveness of the revived Indian traffic rule, however the rule will embark Indian footpaths and roads safe for pedestrians, pets and stray animals.

Only time can quantify the real outcome of the recently introduced traffic rule in India. What do you suggest?
