What Is CPCB’s New Marking & Labelling Rule on Product Packaging?
The Central Pollution Control Board of India has introduced a new marking and labelling policy, which is a beacon of hope for sustainable product packaging in India.
The new Marking & Labelling standard will mandate certain obligations for Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners on product packaging to facilitate transparency, traceability and consumer awareness.
What Are The Marking & Labelling Guidelines Proposed by CPCB?
- Specific marking and information must be printed on plastic packaging
- Enable better tracking methods to facilitate recycling and disposal
- 4 different ways to mark and label product packages – using printed labels, affixed labelling by using adhesive, tape, card, directly printing the plastic packaging material type
- Every label must be marked with information about the density of the plastic category along with the registration number of PIBOs (Producer, Importer and Brand Owner)
- Every plastic package must bear information about the Registration number of the Producer, Importer or Brand Owner including multi-layered carry bags. The scannable QR/Barcode will have these informations on product packages
How Will the New Marking & Labelling Policies Impact Product Packaging?
- Enhance transparency to check the quality and design of product packaging
- All types of plastic packaging category or type is traceable via a smart scannable QR code, allowing anyone to access the origin, making it easy to manage and track once it becomes plastic waste
- Making every PIBO accountable for adding sustainable and recyclable product packaging
- Help every consumer to avail detailed information about PIBOs responsible for Plastic Product Packaging and whether they’re complying with CPCBs Marking & Labelling rules or not
- Any act of defying new Marking and labelling regulations leads to hefty penalties, revocation of the EPR licence
- Every Food Business Operator (FBOs) now require new front-of-pack (FOP) to be marked and labelled from 1st July 2025
- FSSAI registered FBOs must share detailed information on product packaging wrappers from now onwards to empower consumers to make informed buying choice
